The restaurant even made late food delivery - Delhivery

Sahil, who grew up in Delhi, completed his education from St. Xavier's High School there and pursued a mechanical engineering degree from the National Institute of Technology, Karnak. Sahil not only did his post graduation in finance from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore but was also an all round gold medalist. Not only this, Sahil worked for four months at the University of Maryland in the US as a research intern during his Mechanical Engineering course to gain work experience while studying. Two years later, he also did a three-month summer associate internship at Bain & Company, London, at IIM-B.After its completion, Sahil completed his studies from IIM and joined Bain & Company as full time Associate Consultant. In the next one year, Sahil was promoted to Senior Associate Consultant. With the growth, his area of responsibilities also expanded and he was entrusted with sectors like Private Equity, Telecom and Healthcare. Seeing Sahil's performance, he was soon given the responsibility of consultant.

Searched business idea during job

It was during this job that Sahil met Suraj Saharan and Mohit Tandon. The three became friends over their mutual interest in starting their own venture. With time the idea of starting a venture got stronger and the search for a workable idea started. Due to this, he decided to take six months leave from the job.One night during those holidays, when Sahil and Sooraj ordered food online from a Gurgaon-based restaurant, they realized the difficulty in delivery, and realized that Indian e-commerce is lacking in delivery facilities and the restaurants have a lot to offer. There is also no online or physical model for the delivery network. In this shortcoming, he got his business idea. The duo met the restaurant owner and offered to settle the delivery issue. It was from here that Delhivery was born. The process of converting the idea into a business started and the necessary preparations were completed in a very short span of time. Now it was time to hire delivery boys. Meanwhile, Sahil met the owner of the restaurant from where he often ordered food.In a conversation with the owner, he learned that he was preparing to close the restaurant and relocate his staff. Knowing this, Sahil proposed to hire those employees.

Delivery model brought business

With his savings and investment from Abhishek Goyal of UrbanTouch.com, Sahil started Delhivery out of a 250 sq ft corporate office in Gurgaon. At the time of inception, he had a team of ten people including four delivery boys. While expanding his business, he started tying up with local restaurants and promised to deliver their orders within half an hour.Delhivery's model was well received and in no time they were getting 100 orders a day in Gurgaon itself. Abhishek Goyal also liked the work of Delhivery and handed over the order of his package delivery to Sahil. It was from there that the first e-commerce client was added to Denhivery's account.

explore possibilities

Seeing the work they get from commerce, Sahil and his friends deeply investigated the market and found that there are huge opportunities for them in this field, and they can do restaurant deliveries later as well. With this in mind, in January 2011, he completely focused Delhivery on e-commerce.By the end of 2015, we were delivering 500 shipments for 5 e-commerce clients with three centers in Delhi and NCR. Shortly after, they expanded their storage services with funding and started their operations in Delhi as well as Chennai.

Big success in short time

With storage, the company soon managed to expand its business to 31 cities in the country. From here Sahil and his companions did not look back. Started five years ago with five co-founders and a handful of delivery boys, the company currently operates across 175 cities in the country as well as the Middle East and South Asia with a team of 3200 employees. Not only this, in this financial year the company has crossed the turnover of 220 crores.

Challenges came in the way of success

In the beginning of the company, Sahil and his colleagues had to face many difficulties. Many people told him that this idea is not going to work and the business will have to be stopped in the middle. Whereas some people refused to join them saying that they will do the logistics work in-house as your fee is very high. Some decisions also created obstacles in the way. But he learned a lot from these decisions and achieved success by continuing his efforts.
